Holger Rune said he would “do anything to win Roland-Garros” after overcoming a steely Christopher Eubanks 6-4 3-6 7-6(2) 6-2 to advance to the second round of the French Open.
Rune had to dig deep in the opening three sets but the fourth was a much more straightforward affair as the Dane wrapped up the victory in two hours and 50 minutes.
The sixth seed will meet Gael Monfils or Sebastian Baez in the second round, hoping to land his first major title in Paris.

“It was super difficult,” the 20-year-old said at the conclusion of the match.
“There’s always first-round nerves, and Chris played very freely, hitting well and serving big. I had to adjust to the conditions.
“This is one of my favourite tournaments, and I would do anything to win Roland-Garros; I’m super happy to come through.

“The atmosphere is unbelievable. It’s one of the best tennis countries in the world; I enjoy every moment playing here.”
Rune reached the quarter-finals last year – the first Danish man to do so – and is predicted to go far in this year’s tournament after clinching the Bavarian International title in Munich and finishing runner-up in Monte Carlo and Rome.

He won the first set before dropping the next and needed a tie-break to win the third. Rune ran away with the fourth set and even and recovered after a fall late on to close out the victory.
