Wrexham star gets international call-up weeks after Ryan Reynolds’ side win promotion

One of Wrexham’s promotion heroes has been rewarded with a full international call-up after Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s side returned to the Football League in style
Wrexham star Jacob Mendy has received his first international call-up after helping the Red Dragons to the Football League with promotion.

The 26-year-old wingback and winger has been called up for Gambia’s AFCON qualifier away to South Sudan with head coach Tom Saintfiet impressed by his recent performances.
Mendy has made 30 league appearances for Phil Parkinson’s side since joining from Boreham Wood last year, following spells with Wealdstone and Carshalton Athletic.

A promotion parade and Las Vegas party followed Wrexham’s 111 point haul, which saw them beat Notts County to top spot, with the League Two season starting on May 18.

Congratulating Mendy, one delighted Wrexham fan said: “Well done mate pure class as always.”

A second added: “Congratulations Jacob Mendy well deserved call up.” A third agreed: Fully deserved Jacob Mendy go smash it!”
Co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney will no doubt be delighted by the news, with Mendy also able to represent Guinea-Bissau, Senegal and Spain.
Speaking to The Mirror before Wrexham’s crunch win over Boreham Wood back in April, Mendy spoke highly of the owners.

He said: “A lot of people maybe had doubts because it’s a bit crazy, but they’re showing every week, every month how invested they are in this club.
“I think not only Wrexham, but the whole community and football, are really lucky to have these two people doing what they’re doing.”

With Parkinson put in charge of the summer transfer plans, Wrexham will be among the favourites to earn promotion to League One next season with their Premier League dream on track.
