Holger Rune addresses Wayne Rooney chants at Wimbledon for him as he discusses the fan support for him

Denmark’s Holger Rune, the 20-year-old tennis player, and Wayne Rooney, the English Football manager, have the same pronunciation of their last names despite the spelling difference. So, when the crowd at Wimbledon cheered and chanted Rune’s name, it sounded just like the chant used for Rooney.

When the reporter asked Holger if he would encourage the fans to keep chanting ‘Rune,’ he replied with a slight smile, saying he hopes they do and keep supporting him as they have throughout the tournament. He went on to say that it’s great to have people from his country, Denmark, cheering for him.

‘’They’re showing really, really good support and it’s a nice feeling to be out there with many Danes and British’’ Said the young 20-year-old.

The reporter also asked if he felt honored about the chanting sounding like Rooney. To this, Rune pointed out that he did not think about it first but now that the reporter said it he thinks it’s true and it’s great that he’s receiving so much support.

“I didn’t think of it, but when you say it, it’s true. I guess it’s not the worst thing. It’s great. They’re showing really, really good support,” said Holger.

Furthermore, the Danish player said he hopes they keep supporting him and cheering for him, and he feels great to be playing with so many Danes and British people that are wishing him the best, and it’s the worst thing.

Holger Rune won his second round in a not-so-difficult match against the Spanish Roberto Carballes Baena in straight sets with scores of 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4. Rune has been consistent in his career after breaking into the top 500 of the ATP in 2020 and then breaking into the top 100 after winning his first ATP title in 2021.

He broke into the top 10 by winning the Paris Masters last year and is now ranked No. 6 in the world after winning two Masters titles this year. Holger will be facing off against another Spanish player, David Fokina, in the third round of the Tournament. Holger is aiming for his first Grand Slam win.
