What if Maria Sharapova was still an active tennis player? Is there any player in the circuit who could give tough competition to the five-time Grand Slam champion other than her arch-rival Serena Williams? Yes, the Russian tennis player believes that the current world number 3 would have given her a hard time on the tennis court.
After 3 years of retirement, the Russian star recently revealed that she might have found it difficult to deal with one of the present top 10 tennis players on the WTA tour, i.e. if she was still active on the Tour.
Maria Sharapova says that facing this player would’ve been a nightmare
Earlier this year, Netflix treated tennis enthusiasts to a docu-series that focused on the lives of several current generation tennis stars. The retired Russian player was also in the Netflix docuseries ‘Breakpoint’, where she praised the Tunisian star and 2022 Wimbledon finalist, Ons Jabeur. While commenting about her tennis match, the 35-year-old stated that it would be a ‘nightmare’ to play against her, looking at her style of play.
She said, “When I look at Ons I think, that I wouldn’t have matched up well against her. She would have been a nightmare to play against. Thank god I am retired because that slice, oh God. I’d have nightmares about it.”
Moreover, Sharapova was in awe of the Tunisian tennis player. Jabeur hails from Tunisia, and faced a lot of difficulties to become a well-known tennis player. However, this is not the first time when the former world number one talked about her opponent. Earlier before, when the tennis player was quite active on the tennis court, there was this one tennis legend whom she considered as the most intimidating opponent.
Sharapova’s most intimidating opponent
Throughout her illustrious tennis career, the former world number one has faced a lot of tough opponents. However, last year in a podcast, the Russian star revealed the toughest and most intimidating opponent she ever faced during her entire career.
According to the five-time Grand Slam champion, Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam champion was the most challenging and most consistent tennis player at her level. Not only that, they both shared a great rivalry back in their heydays on the WTA Tour. And always considered the American tennis legend as her toughest competitor.
