Bjorn Borg defended his Wimbledon title on the event's 100th anniversary in 1977

In 1977, Wimbledon celebrated its centenary, and the stage was set for a captivating showdown between tennis icons Bjorn Borg and Jimmy Connors. Borg had already established himself as a rising star, capturing titles at Rome, Roland Garros, and Wimbledon in the preceding years. However, a missed opportunity at the French Open left him eager to make amends on the grass courts of The All England Club.

Despite facing challenges throughout the tournament, including being two sets down against Mark Edmondson in the second round, Borg demonstrated his resilience. He triumphed over Vitas Gerulaitis in a memorable semi-final clash, setting the stage for a highly anticipated final against Connors on July 2.

In a grueling three-hour and 14-minute battle, Borg emerged victorious, defeating Connors 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4. This hard-fought victory earned Borg his 25th ATP title and his fourth Major at the young age of 21. The final held special significance, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the tournament’s inception in 1877.

The match could have concluded earlier had Borg capitalized on two break opportunities in the fifth game of the decisive set. However, Connors thwarted Borg’s chances and mounted a comeback to level the score at 4-4. Nonetheless, Borg managed to regain his composure, claiming the final two games to secure the championship and successfully defend his title.

With this victory, Borg joined tennis legends Rod Laver and John Newcombe as the third player to defend the Wimbledon title in the Open era. Despite an early setback in the match, Borg found his rhythm and broke Connors in crucial moments, seizing control and ultimately prevailing in a thrilling encounter.

The triumph proved to be a pivotal moment in Borg’s career, as he regarded it as the happiest one of his career. Connors fought valiantly, showcasing his resilience, but fell short in his bid to secure his first Wimbledon title in three years.

Bjorn Borg’s triumph over Jimmy Connors in the 1977 Wimbledon final remains etched in tennis history as a remarkable clash between two extraordinary athletes. The match not only marked the centenary of Wimbledon but also exemplified the unwavering determination and skill of these tennis legends.
