World No 6 Holger Rune reveals he is making progress from a back injury and hopes to be ready for the Toronto Masters, which starts on August 7th. After suffering a Wimbledon quarterfinal defeat to Carlos Alcaraz, Rune represented Denmark at the Hopman Cup last week – where he suffered back-to-back surprise losses to Leandro Riedi and Richard Gasquet.
After evidently struggling with something at the Hopman Cup, Rune withdrew from this week’s ATP 250 event in Umag. Rune withdrawing from Umag raised some concerns regarding the Dane’s health ahead of the North American hard court swing. “Hi everyone. Monday I had a scan on my back and are now getting various treatments and have started controlled practice and it’s much better than last week. So I continue treatment and I hope that I will be fit fo fight to compete in Canada.
I am hungry to work,” Rune wrote.

Rune missing this week’s ATP Umag
Rune, 20, was scheduled to make his third consecutive Umag appearance this year.
In 2021, Rune debuted on the clay courts of Umag when he suffered a first-round loss to Radu Albot. Last year, Rune again failed to clinch a first Umag win as the Dane had a first-round bye before shockingly losing to Barnabe Zapata Miralles in the round-of-16.
Rune was hoping to return to Umag this year as well but it didn’t happen.”Unfortunately, I won’t be able to play at the Croatia Open this year, as I have issues with my lower back, an injury that prevented me from performing at my usual level this week. Starting from Monday, I will undergo the necessary treatments and then take some rest. I wish you an excellent tournament in Umag, and I hope to see you next year,” Rune told Umag in a statement. It remains to be seen if Rune will be able to play in Toronto in early August.
