Wrexham 0-0 Wigan (4-2 on pens): Celebrity owner Ryan Reynolds compares cup win to a ****ing Aliens movie’ after Welsh club knock out League One side on penalties

Football League new boys Wrexham knocked League One Wigan Athletic out of the Carabao Cup on penalties and sparked a hilarious X-rated Tweet from celebrity owner Ryan Reynolds.

The game endless goalless after 90 minutes which meant the match had to be settled by a penalty shootout on Tuesday night.

Wigan duo Charlie Hughes and Thelo Aasgaard blazed their penalties over the crossbar to hand the Welsh side victory.

Afterwards Hollywood actor and Wrexham owner Ryan Reynolds tweeted: ‘Another year of hearts jumping outta chests like we’re in a ****ing Aliens movie.’

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson had promised changes after his side’s defeat to MK Dons in their League Two opener and only three players kept their places, while Wigan’s team showed four changes from the side that won 2-1 at Derby.

Wrexham edged a pretty even first half with Ollie Palmer heading over before James Jones’ fierce low drive was parried by Sam Tickle.

Charlie Wyke’s header over the bar from Hughes’ cross from the right proved to be the final chance to break the deadlock.

In the shootout, Hughes sent Wigan’s third kick over the crossbar and with Sam Dalby scoring Wrexham’s fourth kick, Aasgaard had to score to keep Wigan’s hopes alive, but the Norwegian player also blazed his shot over the bar to send Wrexham into the next round.
